Hatzerim is an Israeli Air Force base, named after the Kibbutz which is located 3 km east to the base. Hatzerim is the first Israeli Air Force base that was built from scratch and not over an ex RAF air field. It was built in 1966 and its first commander was Colonel Joseph Joe Alon. Hatzerim is the home of the IAF flight academy (formerly flight school) which moved to Hatzerim right after its inauguration. Three fighter squadron are located in Hatzerim. The orange tail flies F-16I.  The hammers operates F-15I fighter jets and the Flying Tigers uses A-4 Skyhawks as trainers for the flight academy. The Desert Birds squadron operates Black Hawk helicopters. The Israeli Air Force Museum is located also in Hatzerim.
