The 7th Armor division (Hativa Sheva) is the oldest armor unit of the IDF. Established in 1948 together with the IDF it is the most famous and prestigious armor division. The battle flag of the division carries proudly campaign ribbons of all Israeli-Arab wars.
In the 1948 War of Independence the young unit participated in the failing attack on the Latrun police fortress. During the Sinai campaign of 1957 Sherman tanks of the 7th division fought against Egyptian fortifications of Abu Agila. In the Six Days war under the command of colonel Shmuel Gorodish it penetrated the Gaza strip and fought along the Han Yunes - Raffah pivot, and conquered El-Arish. The Yom Kippur war found the divison on the Golan Heights, holding the line and stopping the Syrian invasion. Today, Merkava mark 2 is the main battle tank of the 7th armor.
