The IDF purchsed the M16A1 rifles during the late 1960s and early 1970s at very low prices. M16 rifles became the major armament of the IDF, replacing the Uzi, Galil, and all of the other rifles that Israel had used up until that time.

Caliber: 5.56mm NATO

M16A1 Overall length: 986 mm
M4 Overall length: 838 mm (stock extended); 757 mm (stock fully collapsed)

As tactics and strategy developed changes were needed. Rather then buy new weapons, the IDF began a series of upgrades and add ons to the original M16 rifles.  Match barrels were introduced. Flat top uppers were added. Collapsible stocks replaced the originals.

Most of the IDF's M4 rifles are actually M16A1 receivers that have been completely gutted and rebuilt to today's standards.

IDF infantry use the M4 with an upgraded match barrel, Harris bipod and Trigicon 4x32 ACOG™ (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) scope.

The Trigicon ACOG gives you the fast target acquisition, huge exit pupil and long eye relief of a red dot scope without any worry of a battery failing, because there isn't one! The revolutionary dual-illumination tritium / fiber optic lamp gives you brilliant, self-adjusting illumination in any light conditions.

I carry my M16A1 with a barrel mounted laser sight/pointer with a PTT on my tactical fore grip in the front, a Surefire flashlight, and a rear pistol grip. I also have a see through mount for my 50mm 3-9X scope with lighted rangefinder reticle so I can use the iron sights at close range. And a magazine coupler.

IDF Units evaluate and chose the M16/M4 accessories that best fit the needs and goals of their missions.
