The INS Leviathan is a Dolphin class submarine. It is the conventional submarine of the 21st century and is one of the most advanced diesel-electric submarines in the world. The submarines were built by Thyssen Nordseewerke at Emden and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) at Kiel. The Leviathan is totally automated and computer integrated. Electronic systems developed by several major Israeli defense companies. The Leviathan was inaugurated in 1997 by the wife of the chief of general staff, Amnon Lipkin Shahak. The Leviathan was commissioned in the year 1999 and arrived at her home port, Haifa on October of the same year.
